Roemer’s Hat Trick Lifts ’Swords in Opener

GOLDEN, Colo. – Not a bad way to make a collegiate debut.

Playing in his first NCAA match, Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirtschaftsgymnasium Westerburg) pulled out just the second hat trick in Chaminade University men's soccer history as the Silverswords rolled to a 3-0 win Friday at Colorado Christian in their season debut at Lakewood Memorial Field.

Making just their second mainland non-conference road trip outside the state of California, Roemer scored all three of the 'Swords' goals in the first half, two coming in a near-nine-minute span before halftime.

Roemer, a JUCO transfer from Barton Community College in Kansas, put Chaminade on the board with a 25-yard blast in the 11th minute.

Roemer added his second goal in the 36th minute on an assist from Daniel Woo (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Assumption College/Pearl City HS) after the Cougars committed a defensive misplay in their own backfield.

Then with just 16 seconds left before intermission, Roemer's free kick from 20 yards out found the back of the net to give the 'Swords a 3-0 lead and his third goal of the game. The only other hat trick was accomplished by Lukas Pousset who also had three goals, coming against Holy Names on Oct. 19, 2015.

From there, the 'Swords defense held its ground, allowing just three shots in the final 45 minutes, aiding goalkeeper Michael Stafford (Honolulu/Iowa Western CC/Kalani HS) who kept CCU out of the net with three saves. Stafford recorded his fourth career clean sheet, moving him into second in the all-time Chaminade shutout list.

Roemer took seven of Chaminade's 16 shots while Brison Kim (Honolulu/Kalani) attempted three shots off the bench. Brothers Micah Mokulehua (Waimanalo, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kaiser) and Noah Mokulehua (Waimanalo, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kaiser) each attempted two shots.

Goalkeeper Max Collingwood took the loss for the Cougars (0-4).

The Silverswords conclude their Rocky Mountain road trip Sunday at Metro State.
