WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's soccer team resumed their biggest rivalry Sunday, facing Hawai'i Pacific University under the lights at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Playing under extremely windy conditions at the state's finest soccer pitch, the Silverswords took nine shots on the night but just three were on-goal as they dropped a 2-0 decision.
Gerrit Arzberger accounted for the game-winner, punching in a blocked corner kick in the 32nd minute. HPU added an insurance goal in the 77th minute.
Chaminade fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Pacific West Conference.
Tatsushi Hirata (Tokyo, Japan/Monroe College/Wako HS) and
Joseph Wren (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Utah Valley University/Kapolei HS) each attempted two shots.
The Sharks (3-4-1, 1-0-1 PacWest) attempted 19 shots, 13 of which were on-goal
Jeremy Zielinski got the win, making three saves.
Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) made nine stops in taking the loss.
HPU's win earned it two points in the resumption of the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge after the COVID-19 pandemic halted the competition during the spring.
The Silverswords return home to the Saint Louis Field pitch Thursday as they host Concordia University Irvine at 12:30 p.m. Despite the State of Hawai'i and City and County of Honolulu giving the go-ahead for fan attendance at outdoor sports starting Wednesday, a decision to allow vaccinated-only fans to Chaminade men's and women's soccer has not yet been rendered.
