HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team found themselves in a bit of a goal-fest on Thursday. Unfortunately, they came out on the wrong side of the shootout in a 5-2 defeat to Concordia University Irvine at Saint Louis Field.
However, forward
Kelton Cheney (State College, Pa./Penn State/State College HS) was a bright spot for the Silverswords.
Cheney scored both Chaminade goals in the second half, putting himself in the team's record books. Coupled with his two-goal game against Western Washington on Sept. 21, he became the first 'Sword in program history with two career multi-goal games.
There had been 13 other multi-goal games since men's soccer became an intercollegiate program in 2006 but all were by different players. That is, until Thursday.
Cheney drove in a penalty kick in the 58th minute then got his second goal in the 66th minute, ripping a shot from eight yards out after receiving a crossing pass from
Brison Kim (Honolulu/Kalani).
After being held to a single shot in the first half, the 'Swords were finally able to get some good looks at the net. They fired 11 shots in the final 45 minutes, seven being on-goal.
Cheney had three of the shots on target with
Reilly Minigutti (Brooklyn NY/Richmond International Academic and Soccer Academy/Dallas, Texas, Jesuit HS) firing two and Kim getting one. Chaminade's other shot on-goal was from
Joseph Wren (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Utah Valley University/Kapolei HS).
Elijah Amadin tallied a hat trick for Concordia (4-4-1 overall, 2-0-0 Pacific West Conference) while Alex Perez had two goals and an assist.
Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) made four saves for Chaminade (2-5-0, 0-3-0 PacWest). Andre Flores had three stops in earning the win.
The Silverswords are back in action Saturday when they face Biola at the Saint Louis Field pitch. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
