WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team remains in 12th-place after the second round of the Dennis Rose Invitational at the par-70, 6,566-yard Waikoloa Beach Course on the Big Island.
The Silverswords shot a second-round 307 on Tuesday, a 12-shot improvement from Monday's opening round. They have a 36-hole total of 626, 21 shots back of their next competitors, the University of Texas-Tyler.
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) carded a second-round 2-over-par 72 and is tied for 48th overall at 12-over 152. His highlight of the day came on the final hole of the day at the par-4, No. 12, holing out from 156 yards out for an eagle.
"The wind was coming off the right side," he said. "I hit a cut 8-iron because there was a lot of room behind the hole and it was the perfect yardage."
Gunderson is the only player among the 71 golfers to eagle the 12th.
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei), the 'Swords' first round leader, shot a 5-over 75 in Round 2 and his a shot behind Gunderson.
Ryan Shields Vega (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake) posted an 80 for the second consecutive day for a two-day total of 160.
Emerson Gardner (Holladay, Utah/Cottonwood) also shot an 80 in the second round and sits at 161.
Ryan Netelbeek (Salt Lake City/Cottonwood) struggled with a 92 in the round and has a 36-hole total of 175.
Colorado Christian is the second round team leader, shooting a second-round 269 for a 551 total and has a 10-shot lead over Cal State San Bernardino.
CCU's Cam Sandland fired a 9-under 61 in the second round to grab the 36-hole lead at 133, one shot better than CSUSB's Brian Nielsen, the first round leader. Sandland's 61 was two strokes off the course record of 59 set by UCLA's Parker McLachlin, a Honolulu native and current PGA Tour player, in 1999.
The final round is set for Wednesday with the first tee times at 7:30 a.m.
