Men’s Soccer Drops OT Decision at Dominican

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – In the last half-decade, no team seems to give the Chaminade University men's soccer team more heartbreak than Dominican University of California.

The Penguins on Saturday did it to the Silverswords again, overcoming a one-goal deficit by scoring twice in the final eight minutes to snatch away a 2-1 overtime win amid cool conditions at Kennelly Field.

Eddie Silverbush knocked in the game-winner in the 92nd minute and, before that, Roberto Garcia tied the game on a penalty kick with six minutes remaining in regulation.

Ever since Dominican lured then-Chaminade head coach Zach Kingsley away to the same position just two weeks before the start of the 2015 season, the Penguins have taken victory away from the 'Swords four of the last six years. In each of those four, including Saturday, DUC scored the game-tying or winning goal inside of 15 minutes left, three of them coming with eight minutes or less.

Brison Kim (Honolulu/Kalani) scored Chaminade's goal in the 60th minute. Kim's third goal of the year, one behind Kelton Cheney (State College, Pa./Penn State/State College HS) for the team lead, gave the Silverswords a 1-0 edge.

The goal was set up via the same circumstances as the 'Swords' score in their home finale against Point Loma on Monday; a corner kick by Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirtschaftsgymnasium Westerburg HS) to Takahiro Kosins (Tokyo, Japan/Colorado Mesa University/Kalani, Hawai'i, HS) to the goal scorer. Roemer got his fourth assist of the year, tied for second most in a single season while increasing his career record total to eight.

But six minutes left, the 'Swords were called for a foul in the box where Garcia converted the PK for the tying score. Then in second minute of overtime, the Penguins worked their way down the field where Cameron Bacca centered a pass to Silverbush for the winner. Ironically, Silverbush had the game-winner in the 75th minute the last time the two teams met in 2019.

Roemer took a team-high four shots for the 'Swords, half being on-goal. Kim and Jamin Fonseca (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) took two kicks at the net each. Chaminade attempted 13 shots, six on-goal.

Dominican had 22 shots, nine on target with Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) making five saves. Yasue's Penguin counterpart, Ruben Raygoza, also made five stops.

Defender Lyric De Leon (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Grand Canyon University/Kapolei HS) broke two program records with career start No. 55 and, with his 92 minutes, passed former teammate Curtis Coburn with 4,962 career minutes.

Chaminade is 2-8 overall and is still seeking their first Pacific West Conference win. Dominican improved to 7-2-2 and 2-2-1 in the PacWest.

The Silverswords will continue their road trip Monday against Holy Names at Pioneer Field on the Cal State East Bay campus in Hayward, Calif. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Pacific time, 11 a.m. Hawaiian.
