HAYWARD, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's soccer team put together its finest offensive showing ever Monday, defeating Holy Names, 5-1, at Pioneer Stadium on the Cal State East Bay campus.
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/University of Hawai'i/Pearl City HS) and
Asya Holt (Honolulu/Roosevelt) each scored twice while
Hoku Schatz (Hau'uala, O'ahu, Hawai'i/University of Idaho/Kahuku HS) added another goal as the Silverswords set a single-game scoring record and another for wins.
The 'Swords' five goals broke the previous record of four set in 2017. They also surpassed their 2016 mark with their fifth win of the season, improving to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Pacific West Conference.
Although it took longer than anticipated, Fontes finally reached the milestones everyone expected her to reach at the beginning of the year: the school's goals and points records.
Fontes' two goals enabled her to break Caitlin Tatemichi's marks, giving the fifth-year senior 16 goals and 35 points. It didn't take her long to reach both.
Fontes tied Tatemichi's marks by finding the back of the net at 6 minutes, 57 seconds into the game, the ninth-fastest goal in program history. Seven-and-a-half minutes later, Fontes scored again to surpass Tatemichi as the team's career leader in both categories.
Fontes' scores sandwiched one by Schatz, who fired in her first career collegiate goal which came in the 11th minute.
The 'Swords weren't done in the first half, however. Holt got her first goal of the season in the 24th minute which gave them a 4-0 lead at the half. The four goals not only set a program record for goals in a half but tied the mark for goals in a game.
The junior wasn't finished, adding her second score in the 54th minute which set the new team's goal record with
Shayla Padilla (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Oral Roberts University/Leilehua HS) assisting on the score. It also allowed Fontes and Holt to become the first teammates in program history with multi-goal matches in the same game.
The Hawks managed to get on the board on a score by Isabell Rodriguez in the 73rd minute.
Chaminade launched 16 shots towards the net, nine of which were on-goal. Fontes took three shots while Holt, Schatz,
Morgan Smith (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) and
Savannah Breeze Miranda (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) had two each. Their defense also limited Holy Names to just two shots.
Naomi Takata (Honolulu/Pearl City) did not have to record a save as she got her record fifth win of the season. Nyah Summers made one save in taking the loss for Holy Names (0-14, 0-6 PacWest) which dropped its 25th straight match. Abigail Burnell played the final 70 minutes in goal for the Hawks.
The Silverswords continue their road trip Thursday at Academy of Art. Kickoff at Paul Goode Field is 10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, 7 a.m. Hawaiian.
