HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team got back to the Saint Louis Field pitch on Saturday, trying to bounce back from last week's stunning overtime loss to Hawai'i Pacific University.
But the University of Hawai'i Hilo had other plans, scoring three goals in a 20-minute span to turn back the Silverswords, 4-1.
The loss dropped Chaminade to 0-2 while the Vulcans (1-0) were successful in their season opener.
The 'Swords opened on a high note when
Tasman Turner (Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Iolani) tapped in a
Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirtschaftgymnasium Westerburg HS) corner kick just 10 minutes in.
But with the howling wind and intermittent showers streaming from Palolo Valley, UH Hilo found its stride with a goal in the 22nd minute to knot the score followed by the go-ahead score from John Grover off a free kick 12 minutes later. The Vulcans added another score just before the half to take a 3-1 lead at intermission.
Turner took three of Chaminade's 10 shots, all on-goal.
Lono Kaialau (Waianae, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Damien) took two shots at the net.
Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) faced seven shots, making one save.
UH Hilo's Christian Souza picked up the win.
The Silverswords are next in action on Sunday, March 7 when they host HPU at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
