HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team wrapped up a very short four-match home season with a Sunday split against local rivals University of Hawai'i Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific University in the PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament at McCabe Gymnasium.
The Silverswords took Hawai'i Pod-leading UH Hilo to five sets before dropping a 26-24, 19-25, 25-11, 19-25, 15-11 decision in the afternoon match.
The 'Swords did rebound in the sixth and final match of the tournament with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-27, 25-14 win over HPU.
Senior right-side hitter
Rachel Reedy (Temple City, Calif./Arcadia) combined for 33 kills in her final home matches of a much-heralded career. Senior setters
Danielle Wiley (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) and
Riley Lynch (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kalaheo) had 72 and 22 assists, respectively. And the team's fourth senior, utility player
Claire Zanon (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) had 52 digs.
Two of the seniors continued to climb the school's career statistical lists. Reedy moved into 10th in the school's all-time kills list, giving her 850 in her career, trailing Joan Lilio by just one and
Cassie Rushlow by two. Zanon's efforts on defense also gives her 1,202 digs, putting her within striking distance of
Brenda Walker's school record of 1,239 with four matches remaining. She also moved into seventh in service aces with 102.
UH Hilo 3, Chaminade 2
Reedy put down 17 kills in the match while
Brooklen Pe'a (Woods Cross, Utah/Youngstown State/Bountiful HS) added 12 and 13 digs as the Vulcans were taken to a fifth set for the first time in nearly a month.
Wiley dished out 41 assists, three shy of her career high which she set in her freshman year. Zanon collected 28 digs with
Lataisia Saulala (Morgan Hill, Calif./Oakwood)pushing back six blocks.
The 'Swords managed to ding the Vulcans for nine service aces, five by
Annah Rivera (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany).
Chaminade 3, HPU 1
In their final home match of their careers, the seniors went out in style.
Reedy had a match-high 16 kills while Wiley had 31 assists and Lynch 17 more. Zanon had 24 digs, her fifth 20-dig match in the past six matches.
Underclassmen got into the act too. Saulala had 13 kills with a .600 attack percentage and had five total blocks. Pe'a added 10 kills, 11 digs and four blocks while
Kyra McCain (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) added eight kills and five blocks.
The 'Swords had 59 kills to the Sharks' 45 while out-blocking them, 10 to 3.
After losing the third set, Chaminade held a slim 6-5 lead before deciding they didn't want to delay the senior celebration any further. A 12-4 gave them breathing room and, fittingly, it was Reedy's final home swing which was the clincher.
The Silverswords have one more PacWest Hawai'i Spring Tournament remaining this weekend before wrapping the spring season. They will travel to Hilo for the second time this season to face UH Hilo and HPU again but the trio will be joined by Alaska Anchorage, one of the top Division II programs in the West.
The 'Swords will open against the Seawolves on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
