AIEA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team opened their 2021 fall non-championship season Sunday with a 342 at the Hawai'i Pacific University Sharks Shootout.
The Silverswords are sixth after the opening 18 holes at the 6,787-yard, par-72 Pearl Country Club.
Freshmen make up half the 'Swords roster but it is returnees
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) and
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) leading the way. Peterson shot a team-low 6-over-par 78 while Gunderson posted an 81.
Gavin Bedoya (Honolulu/Kaiser) carded an 88 on Sunday, two shots off his career low with fellow returnee
Jackson Tyler (La Plata, Md./Wesley College/Montverde Academy, Fla.) opened his season at 94.
Making their collegiate debuts Sunday were
Ryan Shields Vega (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake),
Jett Jones (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego),
Ryan Netelbeek (Salt Lake, City, Utah/Cottonwood) and
Emerson Gardner (Holladay, Utah/Cottonwood). Shields Vega and Jones both shot 90 while Netelbeek and Garnder shot 93 and 96, respectively.
HPU and Hawai'i Manoa "B" are the co-leaders at 299. HPU's Keita Okada and Hawai'i B's Jake Sequin are the first round co-leaders at even-par 72.
The HPU Sharks Shootout concludes Monday at Pearl CC with the 18-hole finale.
