AIEA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the year Monday with a fifth-place finish at the HPU Sharks Shootout at the par-72, 6,787-yard Pearl Country Club.
After struggling in Sunday's first round, the Silverswords improved their score by 30 shots for a 312 in Monday's final round, a two-day total of 654.
Five 'Swords –
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei),
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle),
Ryan Shields Vegas (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake),
Ryan Netelbeek (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood) and
Emerson Gardner (Holladay, Utah/Cottonwood) – all improved their scoring from Sunday's first round.
Peterson finished in a tie for 17th, carding a final round 5-over-par 77, after a 78 on Sunday. Gunderson shot a 79 on Monday after the previous day's 81.
The biggest improvements, however, came from three freshmen, all coming in double-digits. Shields Vega had a 14-shot differential, carding a final round 4-over 76 while Netelbeek's was 13 with a Monday tally of 80. Gardner had an 11-shot improvement with a final round 85.
Shields Vega wrapped up his first collegiate tournament with a 36-hole total of 166 with Netelbeek at 173 and Gardner at 181.
Gavin Bedoya (Honolulu/Kaiser) finished the Shootout with a 179 while
Jett Jones (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego) two-day total was 187.
Hawai'i Manoa won the team title with a 599, just one shot ahead of Hawai'i Hilo.
UH Hilo's Keith Ing won medalist honors with a 3-under 141, four shots better than HPU's Keita Okada.
