Men’s Soccer Falls to Vulcans in Overtime

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team was hoping to make it 2-for-2 in their non-conference matchups against their island rivals.

However the University of Hawai'i Hilo ruined those plans by bouncing the Silverswords in overtime, 2-1, Thursday at Saint Louis Field.

David Mayser scored both goals including the winner in the 93rd minute for the Vulcans (1-0) who were making their season opener.

Jamin Fonseca (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) scored Chaminade's lone goal of the match, coming in the seventh minute on a penalty kick.

Mayser knotted the score with a penalty kick of his own in the 49th minute.

Chaminade had two looks at the net in the final 10 minutes with shots from Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirstchaftsgymnasium Westerburg HS) and Fonseca.

Three minutes into OT, Mayser circled around several defenders at the top of the box and fired a shot towards the lower-right corner that found the back of the net for the game-winner.

Roemer and Brison Kim (Honolulu/Kalani) each took three of the 'Swords' 12 shots. Fonseca and Kelton Cheney (State College, Pa./Penn State/State College HS) had two each.

UH Hilo attempted 16 shots, four from Luca Lippert.

Michael Harre made three saves to earn the win. Clay Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) played final 45 minutes and made one save to take the loss. Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) started the match and played the first half, making five saves.

The good news for the 'Swords is that the result has no bearing on the Pacific West Conference standings as it was a non-conference contest.

The Silverswords return to action Tuesday when they host Western Washington at Saint Louis Field, the first visit by a mainland school since the end of the 2019 season.
