HONOLULU – Talk about an emotional rollercoaster.
The Chaminade University men's soccer team on Tuesday surrendered two different leads before
Joaquin Maud's (Cordoba, Argentina/Coronado) first career goal helped the Silverswords pull out a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win against Western Washington at Saint Louis Field.
The 'Swords were up on the scoreboard, 2-0 and 3-2, when the Vikings tied it both times before Maud's golden goal in the 104th minute.
Brison Kim (Honolulu/Kalani) dribbled down the left sideline and fired a cross to Maud who tapped the ball towards Western Washington goalkeeper Patrick Restum. But Restum could not gain full control of the ball as it got away and dribbled into goal.
In the first 40 minutes, it appeared as the Silverswords would wrap the first-ever meeting between the two programs early.
Kim got the game's first score, firing a shot from the left side of the box in the seventh minute with
Joseph Wren (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Utah Valley University/Kapolei HS) providing the assist.
That was followed 14 minutes later by
Kelton Cheney (State College, Pa./Penn State/State College HS) who hit a shot from the right side of the box off a free kick from
Colin Roemer (Cologne, Germany/Barton CC/Wirstschaftgymnasium Westerburg HS), putting Chaminade up 2-0.
Roemer's assist was the sixth of his career, tying him with Reece Hambly and Tyler Braunthal for the most in program history. He also recorded the 20th point of his career, putting him just two away from the program's all-time record held by Noah Mokulehua.
However right before half, WWU countered with goals in the 41st and 43rd minutes to square the match at 2.
The 'Swords went ahead just five minutes into the second half when Cheney got his second goal of the match when he headed in
Zach McClellan's (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos) long throw in from the left sideline.
Two minutes later, the Vikings countered with a goal from Drew Farnsworth who knotted the score at 3.
From there, defenses took over as the teams battled for possession over the next 50-plus minutes, extending into both overtimes.
The 'Swords finally broke through on Maud's winner with just under six minutes left to play.
Brandon Yasue (Honolulu/Kaiser) picked up the win to improve to 2-0 while Restum absorbed the loss. Yasue got the game's only save.
It was Chaminade's first overtime win since September 2018. It was also its first in the second OT since September 2014, a span of seven matches where they were 0-1-6.
The 'Swords improved to 2-1 on the year while Western Washington, the first men's soccer team outside the Pacific West Conference to visit the Saint Louis Field pitch since Cal State San Bernardino in 2013, fell to 1-4.
The Silverswords will face Seattle Pacific – ranked No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings – Saturday at Saint Louis Field. Due to the newest mandates by the mayor of Honolulu and governor of Hawai'i, fans are still barred from attending the match in person.
