Cross Country Teams Open at Big Wave Invite

KAHUKU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's and women's cross country teams opened their season Saturday at the University of Hawai'i Big Wave Invitational at the Kahuku Golf Course.
 
The Silversword men came in second to Hawai'i Pacific University with 38 points while the Chaminade women finished fifth with 143 points.
 
Owen Daugherty (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) picked up where he left off in the spring, finishing the 5-kilometer men's race in 18:16.72 for a fourth-place finish.
 
Transfer Ben Salinas (Highland, Ind./Western Colorado/Highland HS) was the second Silversword to finish, clocking a time of 18:48.94 to finish sixth overall. Elijah Bernardo-Flores (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) followed 14 seconds later at 19:02.29.
 
Conor McMahon (Pacifica, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) came in 10th overall at 20:38.03, followed by Josiah Rodrigues (Honoka'a, Hawai'i/Honoka'a) at 21:27.22 and Peter Jan Ramos at 21:40.81.
 
HPU's Jona Bodirsky was the men's winner at 15:40.24.
 
In the ladies' 5-k, Eri Leong (Las Vegas/SECTA) was Chaminade's top finisher at 24:41.72 with Montserrat Lanfranco (Honolulu/Roosevelt) clocked in at 26:59.38 and Ashley Yoshikawa (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) at 27:27.80.
 
Taylor Aguano (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler) and Kianna Swingle (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge), both on loan from the 'Swords' volleyball team, turned in times of 29:23.96 and 29:28.81, respectively.
 
Sophia Morgan of host Hawai'i was the women's overall winner at 19:19.37. UH also won the team race with 24 points.
 
The Silverswords are next in action when they return to Kahuku on Oct. 2 at the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational. The 'Swords were originally set to compete at the Hawai'i Hilo Invitational on Sept. 11 but the race was postponed until October.
