Cross Country Teams Finish Second at HPU Invitational

WAHIAWA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's and women's cross country team got a sneak preview of the venue that will host next month's Pacific West Conference Championship by competing at the Hawai'i Pacific University Invitational at the Hawai'i Country Club.
 
Both Silversword squads finished second in their respective races. The men tallied 33 points while the ladies accumulated 49.
 
In the men's 8-kilometer event, Kalama Francisco (Pahoa, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Hawai'i) enjoyed his second straight third-place overall finish, crossing the finish at 30 minutes, 13.4 seconds. He was followed by Anthony John Bergancia (Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands/Marianas), who came in sixth overall at 31:36.2 and Anthony Fontanez (Belmar, N.J./St. Rose), whose seventh overall finish was timed at 36:08.7.
 
Nate Mendez (Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kailua) followed at 36:12.0, Dyson Murakami (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kalani) at 37:12.7, Isaiah Taylor (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) at 38:53.0 and Nicholas Gebbia (San Antonio, Texas/Lee) at 51:48.7.
 
In the women's 6-k, Nikiji Dayse (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) was the No. 3 finisher in a time of 23:19.1 while Jordyn Koki (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) was Chaminade's next finisher at 28:38.0.
 
Maggie Turnbach (Brick, N.J./St. Rose) clocked in at 28:59.0 followed by Emily Cooper (Mount Desert Island, Maine/Mount Desert Island) at 29:33.4, Cassie Chong (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) at 29:39.7, Aleah Montgomery (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Leilehua) at 31:43.6 and Ava Walker (Las Vegas/Faith Lutheran) at 33:52.5.
 
The University of Hawai'i Hilo won the team crown with 20 points. HPU had 51.

The 'Swords will get two weeks off then resume action in their final races of the regular season by competing at the UH Hilo Invitational on the Big Island on Oct. 11.
