LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Chaminade University men's golf team remained in sixth place following Tuesday's second round of the Pacific West Conference Championships at the par-72, 7,025-yard Wigwam Golf Course.
The Silverswords shot an identical 309, giving them a 618 total after two days.
Meanwhile,
Ryan Shields Vega (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake) who entered Tuesday tied for the lead with two others, didn't have the kind of day he had in the first round but played steady and was shooting 2-over-par through the first 14 holes.
However, on the par-4 15, disaster struck when he scored a nine, which all but removed him from contention for the individual crown. Shields Vega finished with an 80 in the second round, putting him at 5-over for the tournament, nine shots behind Hawai'i Pacific University's Keita Okada, with whom he shared the lead after the first 18 holes. Hawai'i Hilo's Keith Ng, who also shared the lead with Okada and Shields Vega, fared no better with a second-round 83.
After shooting an 83 on Monday,
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) recovered in the second 18 by firing a 1-over 73, a 10-shot improvement which was the best by any participant in the second round. The fifth-year senior is tied for 21st overall at 12-over.
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) also improved from his first day, cutting six shots off his Monday score with a second round 76. He currently sits in 23rd at 14-over.
Seven Birks (Houston/IMG Academy) shot a second-round 81 and is plus-15 while
Blake Buonopane (Rowley, Mass./St. John's Prep) matched his first round score with an 80 in the second round.
HPU is the team leader with a 594, four shots better than Dominican University of California.
