Women’s Basketball Dropped by Concordia

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team opened a six-game Pacific West Conference home stand Thursday with a 94-53 defeat to Concordia University Irvine.

Dallas Martinez (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Whittier College/Sacred Hearts Academy) posted 15 points and three steals, both team highs, as the Silverswords fell to 1-12 overall and 1-6 in the PacWest. Freshman guard Dezaray Carter (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts Academy) added a season-high 12 points with Taeya Blakeney (Honolulu/Kaiser) contributing a season-best six points.

Another freshman guard, Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway), hauled in a season-high nine rebounds with Paige Relph (Las Vegas/Waianae, Hawai'i) crashing the boards for eight more, tying her career high. Lile Hina Oyama (Honolulu/Kalani) dropped three assists.

Camryn Kiernan had 16 points for the PacWest-leading Golden Eagles who are 7-1 in the conference, 10-4 overall.

A 3-pointer on the game's opening possession by Emma Morris (Tuscon, Ariz./Tanque Verde) would give Chaminade its first of three leads in the first quarter. Carter would provide the 'Swords with seven straight points to give them a 12-10 edge with 6:25 left in the quarter. A 15-1 run over the next three minutes would give Concordia a double-digit lead. Chaminade still demonstrated a lot of grit when Oyama beat the buzzer with a driving layup to cut CUI's lead to 30-19.

However, the 'Swords went cold in the second quarter as they were outscored, 23-4, to help the Eagles pull away for good.

Chaminade was 19-of-62 from the floor and 2-of-9 from 3-point range. They did go to the foul line 21 times, converting 13, and had 43 rebounds.

Concordia was 34-of-88 from the floor and attempted 38 shots from 3-point range, tied for the second-most by a 'Swords opponent this season, making 12. The Eagles had 61 rebounds, 18 assists and 10 steals.

The Silverswords will face Point Loma on Saturday at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
