LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Chaminade University men's golf team on Monday opened the Pacific West Conference Championships with a 28-over-par 316 at the par-72, 7,025-yard Wigwam Golf Course.
The Silverswords are sixth in the tournament, just five shots behind No. 5 and defending PacWest champions Hawai'i Pacific University.
Individually,
Ethan Alexander (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) is in a three-way tie for third overall after firing a first-round 1-under 71, just two shots off the leader, Andrew Otani of Hawai'i Hilo. Alexander birdied five of the first 11 holes but suffered bogeys on 13, 15, 16 and 17 before getting back on track with a birdie on the par-4 18th.
Zachary DuBourdieu (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek) is tied for 20th, carding a 7-over 79. DuBourdieu struggled in seven of the eight middle holes by shooting over-par, but caught fire down the stretch by birding three of his final five.
Matt Monaghan (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) and
Kal O'Brien (Mackinaw City, Mich./Marymount California Univ./Mackinaw City HS) both shot 83 followed by
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) at 87.
UH Hilo, ranked No. 32 in the GolfStat national rankings, is the team leader at 285 while No. 39 Holy Names is 10 shots back at 295.
The second round of the championships is Tuesday with tee times starting at 7 a.m. local time (4 a.m. Hawai'i).
