SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's golf team opened this season Monday at the Westmont Invitational at the par-72 Sandpiper Golf Course.
The Silverswords shot an opening round 314 in Round 1, putting them at seventh place. Dominican University of California and Occidental are just four shots ahead. Host Westmont is the team leader with a 294.
Ky Stopp (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) is in a tie for sixth individually with a 2-over-par 74, just four shots off first-round leader, Nicholas Rocha of Westmont, with one more round remaining.
Jack Yeager (San Clemente, Calif./JSerra Catholic) carded a 4-over 76 and is tied for 11th.
Ethan Alexander (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) shot 79 in his opening round.
Blake Buonopane (Rowley, Mass./St. John's Prep) and
Matt Monaghan (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) both wrapped up their opening rounds with identical 85s.
The Westmont Invitational wraps on Tuesday with Buonopane teeing off in the first group at 4:30 a.m. Hawai'i time.
