LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team opened their crucial southern California on Saturday with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18 win over Biola University at Chase Gymnasium.
Mahala Ka'apuni (Hilo, Hawai'i/Alaska Anchorage/Hilo HS) slammed down a match-high 14 kills and added three blocks to help the seventh-ranked Silverswords remain perfect in the Pacific West Conference standings.
Chaminade is 22-4 on the season and 15-0 in the PacWest as they extended their winning streak to 12, one shy of the school record. Also victorious on Saturday was Point Loma, which swept Westmont, who is now 21-0 and 15-0 in the conference.
With both the 'Swords and Sea Lions winning on Saturday, it eliminated the University of Hawai'i Hilo as the last team who could catch either of them.
Letizia Cammillucci (Padova, Italy/San Jose State/Liceo Amedeo di Savoia Duca D'asosta HS) added nine kills while
Lizanyela Lopez (Lima, Peru/Trinity Valley CC/Saco Oliveros HS) chipped in with six more as well as four blocks. Also putting down six attacks was setter
Grace Talpash (Temecula, Calif./University of Oklahoma/Great Oak HS) who added 29 assists, 10 digs and four service aces.
Nanna Inoue (Kula, Maui, Hawai'i/Tyler JC/King Kekaulike HS) came up with 15 digs.
The Eagles got 10 kills from Hannah Guzzetti in falling to 6-18 and 4-12 in the PacWest.
Chaminade out-hit Biola by a .254-to-.078 clip and out-blocked them 8.5-to-6.
The Silverswords will face Concordia University Irvine on Monday with first serve at 5 p.m. Hawai'i time.
