HONOLULU – After spending the first two months of the new calendar year practicing at the various courses around O'ahu, the Chaminade University men's golf team will finally make their spring championship debut on Monday in the 36-hole Tim Tierney Shootout in Alameda, California.
The Silverswords will try to build on a fall non-championship season that saw them struggle with team scores at times but saw some success individually with low finishes at various tournaments.
In all four fall tournaments, the 'Swords had different finishers who had the lowest individual score.
Ethan Alexander (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) finished in a three-way tie for fourth in the Westmont Invitational at 146,
Matt Monaghan (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) with a 149 in the Hawai'i Triangular while
Ky Stopp (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) had the team's lowest 36-hole score with a 144 at the Dennis Rose Invitational. Chaminade's lowest 54-hole total was 222 by
Jack Yeager (San Clemente, Calif./JSerra Catholic) at the HPU Sharks Shootout.
With the Pacific West Conference Championships to be held at the Mauna Lani Golf Course on the Big Island in April, the Silverswords had three rounds of the course as a preview in the hopes of a low finish and a possible berth in the NCAA Championships in May.
Following the Tierney Shootout, the 'Swords will have two more mainland tournaments at the Hot Dirt Desert Shootout, co-hosted by the Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian University in Goodyear, Arizona. The team will remain in Goodyear the following week to play in the RJGA Palm Valley Classic, hosted by Western New Mexico University.
The 54-hole PacWest Championships follow from April 15-17.
