WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team on Monday opened the Pacific West Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72 Mauna Lani Golf Course in third place overall.
The Silverswords shot a 320 in the first round, trailing team leader University of Hawai'i Hilo by 11 shots. Along with Hawai'i Pacific University (310), all three Hawai'i schools, who already experienced Mauna Lani with at least four rounds each last fall, are atop of the team standings.
Individually,
Ky Stopp (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) fired an even-par 72 and is third overall, just two shots behind opening round leader, HPU's Kyle Krupp.
Stopp birdied his first two holes before back-to-back bogeys right before the turn brought him back to even par. The freshman was at the top of the leaderboard for the first 15 holes before a double-bogey on the par-4 16 dropped him to third.
Blake Buonopane (Rowley, Mass./St. John's Prep) finds himself in the first round's top 10 in a six-way tie for eighth after carding an 8-over 80, aided by birdies on the 10th and 15th holes.
Jack Yeager (San Clemente, Calif./JSerra Catholic) is tied for 14th in field, shooting an 81. He is followed by
Zachary DuBourdieu (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek) at 85 and
Ethan Alexander (New Rochelle, N.Y./Fordham Prep) at 87.
The second round of the PacWest Championship gets underway Tuesday with the first group heading out at 9:40 a.m. Alexander is Chaminade's first golfer to begin with his tee time at 10:30 a.m.
