LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team on Monday was named the Pacific West Conference Team of the Week.
The Silverswords opened PacWest action last week with two big road wins at their two interisland rivals, Hawai'i Pacific University and the University of Hawai'i Hilo, giving them their first 2-0 conference start since 2018-19. They also opened PacWest play with two road wins for the first time in program history.
In front of a vociferous pro-HPU crowd at The Shark Tank as well as a statewide television audience on Spectrum Sports, the 'Swords on Tuesday pulled out a 71-68 win against the Sharks. Four days later, the Silverswords ventured to the Big Island and defeated the Vulcans, 83-79, in front of another hostile crowd at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
In both cases, CUH ensured victory with clutch free throws, combining for 8-of-10 inside of two minutes left.
Nathan Medina (Long Beach, Calif./Biola University/Valley Christian HS), currently the PacWest's leading scorer at 18.1 per game, combined for 36 points and nine 3-pointers for the 'Swords last week while
Kent King (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) added 26 points and 16 rebounds.
Roland Banks II (Bakersfield, Calif./Fullerton College/Cathedral HS) chipped in with 25 points and seven assists.
Chaminade shares the team award with Point Loma and Concordia University Irvine, which also started conference with a 2-0 mark. Biola's Tyus-Parrish Tillman was named the player of the week while defender of the week went to Andre Norris of Jessup University.
The Silverswords are taking this week off for finals before heading back on the road for three more conference games, starting next Monday at Vanguard University. They continue the trip at Azusa Pacific (Dec. 17) and at Westmont (Dec. 19) then take the Division II-mandated Christmas week off before returning to Honolulu for their first PacWest home game on Thursday, Jan. 13 against Vanguard.
