HONOLULU – Game 3 of the five-game home stand for the Chaminade University women's basketball team continued on Saturday, facing Dominican University of California.
For the quarters, the Silverswords went toe-to-toe with the Penguins, one of the top squads in the Pacific West Conference over the years. But a rough second quarter ultimately led to the 'Swords on the short end of a 94-64 decision at McCabe Gymnasium.
Junior guard
Kylie Squier (Branchville, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) posted her first career double scoring game with 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers while
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) made 9-of-13 shots from the floor, tying her career-high of 21 points in the loss.
Ashley Holen (Watford City, N.D./Minot State University/Watford City HS) chipped in with eight.
Schuetze and
Maddy Weaver (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) also hauled in eight rebounds for the short-handed 'Swords who fell to 0-12 and 0-8 in the PacWest.
Holly Dolny (Melbourne, Australia/Loyola University Chicago/Heathdale Christian College) and
Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) each dished out four assists for CUH.
Isobel Crosswhite led Dominican (13-3, 7-3 PacWest) with 21 points.
The 'Swords were able to keep pace with the Penguins in the first 10 minutes, trailing by just five. But a 2-for-15 shooting performance in the second quarter would help DUC build a 46-30 halftime lead.
CUH was unable to make a dent in the deficit in the second half, although they did match Dominican in the field goals made department in the third quarter with both teams making nine.
Chaminade shot 35.3 percent from the field and made six triples while making 10 free throws. Dominican shot at a 50 percent clip and feasted at the charity stripe, hitting 23-of-30.
Although the 'Swords were edged out in the rebounding category by a 41-to-40 count, they had 14 offensive boards to DUC's eight.
The home stand continues on Thursday when the Silverswords host Biola University at McCabe Gym. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
