LONG BEACH, Calif. – A 3-0 start to their five-game homestand has earned the Chaminade University men's basketball team two of the Pacific West Conference weekly awards.
Senior guard
Kent King (Washington, D.C./Vincennes University/Fork Union Military Academy) on Monday was named the PacWest Defender of the Week while the Silverswords are the Team of the Week.
King pulled down 23 rebounds during the week – 18 on the defensive end – while causing eight steals for the 'Swords. His 13 boards in last Tuesday's win over Vanguard set a new career high. He also totaled 59 points (19.7 per game) including a career-high 26 last Thursday over Menlo which included five 3-pointers.
The Silverswords (9-5 overall) got the conference's team award after winning all three games by one possession, helping them stay atop the PacWest at 7-1, the team's best conference start since 2013-14. The three narrow margins included a game-winning layup by
Nate Sasser III (West Palm Beach, Fla./Casper College/Suncoast HS) against Vanguard and a defensive stand against Menlo.
Chaminade is used to close calls this season, going 6-2 in games decided by six points or less.
Andrew Nagy of Point Loma was the PacWest's Player of the Week.
The Silverswords wrap up their home stand with two games this week at McCabe Gymnasium, starting Thursday against Biola then Saturday against Westmont, the latter who handed Chaminade its only PacWest loss this season.
