Women’s Basketball Drops Opener of Road Finale at Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. – The Chaminade University women's basketball team began their final road trip of the season Thursday with a 71-53 defeat to Menlo College at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
 
Down by as many as 25 points midway through the third quarter, the Silverswords chopped the deficit down to nine in the fourth before the Oaks pulled away down the stretch.
 
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) led the 'Swords with 19 points while Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) hit the double-digit scoring mark for the third straight game with 10 points, hitting three 3-pointers.
 
Holly Dolny (Melbourne, Australia/Loyola University Chicago/Heathdale Christian College) and Maddy Weaver (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) both had seven points and seven rebounds on the evening with Dolny dishing out a team-best three assists.
 
Alberte Frisch, Zoe Carillo and Mehkia Applewhite each had 14 points for the Oaks in the final meeting between the two programs as members of the Pacific West Conference. Menlo (12-14, 10-11 PacWest) is departing for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this summer.
 
After spotting the Oaks a 10-point lead in the opening period, Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell), Dolny and Schuetze helped CUH's 10-1 run to bring them within a point before Menlo stretched out its lead back to double digits.
 
Trailing 53-28 in the third, Buttery made all of her 3s and also bookended an 18-2 run with two of them that extended into the final quarter. Schuetze added four more during the surge that got Chaminade to within 55-46.
 
But Menlo went on a 7-0 run to help them pull away down the stretch.
 
Chaminade (0-24, 0-20 PacWest) was 35.7 percent from the field with five 3s and made half of their 16 free throw tries. They also had 33 rebounds, 11 assists to 18 turnovers.
 
Menlo shot 43.1 percent from the floor with six triples and was 9-of-14 at the free throw line. The Oaks had 42 boards, 12 assists with 13 giveaways.
 
The Silverswords will be at Dominican University of California on Thursday with tipoff at 3:30 p.m. Hawai'i time.
