HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's basketball team opened their final home stand of the season Saturday but fell to in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific University, 64-52, at McCabe Gymnasium.
Holly Dolny (Melbourne, Australia/Loyola University Chicago/Heathdale Christian College) had a team-high 15 points while
Alyssa Schuetze (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) added 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double.
Selena Buttery (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) chipped in with nine points – all coming behind the 3-point arc – and eight boards with
Julien Parado (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) dishing out three assists for the Silverswords (0-18, 0-14 Pacific West Conference), who saw their two-game home winning streak against their primary rival snapped.
Kyra Tanabe had 26 points for the Sharks (7-15, 6-10 Pacific West Conference) who not only swept the season series but also earned two points in the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge.
HPU used a 15-0 run spanning the first and second quarters to open up a 24-11 lead before Schuetze's layup ended Chaminade's eight-minute field goal drought.
Despite trailing by double-digits for most of the game, CUH managed to chop the deficit to nine on Parado's layup with 5:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Lucia Ricci knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to help the Sharks pull away.
Chaminade shot 30.5 percent from the floor, making six triples and was 16-of-19 at the free throw line. They managed to out-rebound HPU, 39-to-34, with assists even at eight each.
The Silverswords host Point Loma at McCabe Gym on Tuesday. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
