San Rafael, CA- The Swords took on the Penguins of Dominican (CA) in a Pac West conference matchup and won in five games, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 17-15.
Chaminade won sets one and four, Dominican took sets two and three, setting up a pivotal set five at the Conlan Center. The Swords hit .290 in set five to get the 17-15 win. The fifth and final set went down to the wire as the Penguins led 15-14 before three straight Sword points gave Chaminade the match.
Freshman Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) continues her impressive rookie campaign, putting down 16 kills to go along with 24 digs. Sophomore Malilimago Toailoa (Waikaloa, HI/Kealakehe) was dominant in the middle, hitting .500 on 15 kills.
Senior Courtney Lorusso (Los Angeles, CA/Glendora) added a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs for the Swords.
Junior setter Tanya Alvino (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) had 45 assists and 19 digs for CUH.
Senior Chauntelle Maduli (Honolulu, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) was impressive, finishing with 8 kills and 25 digs on the match.
CUH out-dug the Swords 114-105. The Swords also won the hitting battle, .169 to .164.
The Penguins were led by Gabby Pecora with 23 kills.
With the win, Chaminade improves to 2-13. Dominican falls to 3-13. The Swords are back in action tomorrow (Oct. 3rd) against AAU. First serve is set for 7:00 PM PT in San Francisco, CA.
