Laie, HI- In a battle between two talented teams, the stellar play was not the only story, as 59 fouls were called and 4 players were ejected in a 109-104 BYU-Hawaii win this evening at the Cannon Center on the campus of BYU-Hawaii. The game was a battle throughout, with a frantic first half giving the 2,234 fans end to end action.
The Seasiders stormed out early taking an early double-digit lead, only to see Chaminade storm back and take the lead at the half 53-51.
The game continued its hectic, competitive pace in the second half, with both teams trading great offensive plays. Chaminade was strapped for players as foul trouble plagued the Swords all evening. Eventually, CUH would have to finish with four players as both Rickey Clayborn and Darrell Birton fouled out of the game. Clayborn had 9 points in 7 minutes, prior to fouling out.
An altercation with 3:50 left in the matchup would see four players ejected, BYU-Hawaii's Tenson Akana and Marques Whippy and the Swords Jamar Berry and Cartier Carter.
Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii tied on the glass 43-43. CUH shot 48% on the night. Junior guard Jamar Berry led the Swords with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Joel Smith had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Cartier Carter had a career high 19 points on 6-11 shooting.
Lucas Alves led BYU-Hawaii with 28 points.
Chaminade falls to 14-10 on the year, and remains 7-4 in the Pac West conference. BYU-Hawaii moves to 22-1 overall. The Swords are back in action vs. BYU-Hawaii tomorrow evening, February 28th. Game time is set for 7:30 PM HT at McCabe Gym.
