Waipahu, HI- The Swords took on cross town rival Hawaii Pacific University today at Central Oahu Regional Park and fell in both games, the first game they lost by a score of 10 to 0 and in the second game, 10 to 1.
In the first game, The Silverswords, gave up 9 runs in the top of first inning which proved to be to large of a deficit to overcome. As they couldn't recover, losing by a score of 10 to 0. The game was decided by the mercy rule, which states that if a team is down by 10 or more runs than the game is automatically finished following the at bat assuming that 5 innings have been played.
Sophomore Chelsi Walls, came in with her hands full, the Swords were down by nine runs in the first with only one out. She pitched the remainder of the game giving up only one earned run on 6 hits, she walked only two batters. She faced twenty one total batters; she also went 1 for 2 on the day from the plate. The loss is charged is to Kays'e Lalau, she falls to 0-2 on the year.
The second game was also decided by the mercy rule, CUH lost 10 to 1, Chelsi Walls was the losing pitcher for the Swords. She falls to 0-2 on the year. She faced 15 batters, gave up 5 runs on 8 hits.
Chaminade struggled at the plate, they had 18 total at bats as a team, of those at bats, they had only 3 hits. Keli-Grace Kaowilli-Saniatan, had two of the three hits. She got up to bat in the bottom of the 1st inning and beat out a ground ball hit hard to the second basemen. She also singled to left field in the bottom of the 5th inning, which proved to be the final inning for the Swords. Shalin Yamaguchi got the third and final hit in the bottom of the 4th inning, with a shot to center field. The center fielder made a great play and forced her to stay at first with a single.
With the loss Chaminade falls to 0-4 on the year, while Hawaii Pacific University improves their record to 4-0 on the year. The next game for the Swords is on Thursday, February 12th, against Simon Fraser, a university from Canada. This is a double header match up; first pitch is set for 4:30PM. This game will be played at Central Oahu Regional Park.
