Waipahu, HI- Never back down. The Chaminade Silverswords took on Notre Dame de Namur last night at CORPS field in Waipahu, HI and swept them in two games. Chaminade showed the same kind of confidence that hall of famer Michael Jordan did with ball in his hands with clock winding down. Like Michael Jordan, the Swords delivered, winning the first game 12 to 11 and the second game 1 to 0.
The Swords battled through all 7 innings in game one NDNU had 15 hits to Chaminade's 21 hits. This was a classic battle of grit and determination, it came down to which team wanted the W more. Chaminade was that team; they were relentless in their efforts and walked away with a close win 12 to 11.
Chelsi Walls pitched all 7 innings, she faced 41 batters gave up 15 hits and 9 earned runs. She walked 4 batters and struck out 1. Chaminade helped Chelsi out with solid hitting, in the bottom of the 7th inning trailing by two runs that was needed to pull out the W,the Swords delivered. It started with a single up the middle by Angel Mahaulu, than a single to left by Melissa Harris and a sacrifice bunt by Shalin Yamaguchi putting both runners in scoring position. Kristine Mihara belted in the game winning RBI's with a hard hit ball to the centerfield wall that scored both runners securing the first W of the evening for the Silverwords of Chaminade University.
Game # 2- Game two had a lot less offense in it than the first game of the evening, all things considered though both teams were hitting the ball well. Chaminade had 6 hits and NDNU had 5 hits. Most of the innings were back and fourth three and outs, no one team could get the advantage until the bottom of the 5th inning.
It is common knowledge that team captains should lead by example, two of the Swords Captains did just that in the bottom of the 5th nning. Keli-Grace Kaowilli-Saniatan was the second batter of the inning; she tripled to left field and put herself in perfect position to knocked in by fellow Captain, Chasity Senas. Senas did just that, she hit a long hard fly ball deep to center field that scored Kaowilli-Saniatan from third base. This one run on this one hit, proved to be all that was needed to defeat the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur for the second time.
With the win Chaminade improves to 3-17on the season.
The next game for the Silverwords is at Central Oahu Regional Park, Saturday March 14 against University of Hawaii-Hilo. First pitch is set for 5:00PM HT. This game will be televised live on OC16.
