Honolulu, HI- The 2009 Swords know how to make an entrance. In front of an energized crowd, Chaminade defeated the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay 18-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20, 15-7.
Freshman Kylee Pedro and Whitney Vivieros announced their arrival with strong performances in their opening matches for Chaminade, with Pedro recording 16 kills and Vivieros notching 14 kills to go along with 12 digs. Malilimago Toailoa added 14 kills and senior Courtney Lorusso added 11.
The Swords dominated hitting percentage, outhitting the Pioneers .324 to .238. Digs were nearly even, with Cal State East Bay winning that battle 56-55. The Sword out-blocked the Pioneers 8-3.
The Pioneers were led by Sukhjit Athwal and Brianna Bryant with 14 kills apiece.
With the win, Chaminade moves to 1-0. Cal State East bay drops to 0-1. The Swords are back in action tomorrow night at 7PM to face the Panthers of Adelphi University. The match will be played in McCabe Gym.
