Chaminade WVB: Swords Lose Hard-Fought Five Set Match to HPU

Lorusso leads CUH with 18 kills, 10 digs

Honolulu, HI- The fans got treated to a highly competitive cross-town rivalry this evening as HPU snuck by Chaminade in five sets (16-25, 25-20, 30-28, 18-25, 10-15) this evening in McCabe Gym.    

 

HPU took set one, before Chaminade took the next two sets, the third set being a hotly contested struggle that took 58 points to decide.  HPU took sets four and five for the 3-2 victory. 

    

Senior Courtney Lorusso (Los Angeles, CA/Glendora) led the way with a double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs for the Swords. 

 

Freshman Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) added 7 kills and 17 digs.  Freshman Kylee Pedro (Honolulu, HI/Mid-Pacific) had 9 kills (.421 hitting percentage) and 5 digs for the Swords.

 

Junior setter Tanya Alvino (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) had 38 assists and 16 digs for CUH.  Sophomore Kristy Inamasu (Kahului, HI/Maui HS) added 11 digs for the Swords.  Senior Chauntelle Maduli (Honolulu, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) was impressive, finishing with 7 kills and 20 digs on the match. 

 

HPU out-dug the Swords 91-86.  Team blocks were tied at 10 apiece.     

 

The Sea Warriors were led by Kelly Balanay with 23 kills.  Kelly Keating led HPU with 36 assists. 

 

With the loss, Chaminade moves to 1-10.  HPU improves to 4-6.  The Swords are back in action tomorrow (Sept. 24th) against BYU-Hawaii.  First serve is set for 7:30 PM HT in Laie, HI.boxscore.htm
