Waipahu, HI – The Lady Swords opened their 2010 season tonight against the Lions of Vanguard University and spilt a two game series tonight in Waipahu. They won the first game 3 to 2 and lost the second game 9 to 6. Despite being splitting tonight, CUH showed great potential tonight and will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with as the 2010 Softball season marches forward.
Game # 1: Chaminade opened up strong and never looked back against the Lady Lions of Vanguard University. Junior pitcher Kelly Korras, was named Chaminade's starting pitcher. In fact this particular start, was her first collegiate career softball game. She pitched all 7 innings and gave up 5 hits on 24 at bats.
Despite the great pitching by Korras, the 2010 Lady Swords also played exceptional defense. They had 18 put outs and in the bottom of the 3rd inning their offense stepped up big, scoring 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 errors. They would go into hold that 3 -0 lead until the Top of 5th inning, when Vanguard scored their first of two runs all game. The Lady Lions ended up scoring their final run in the Top of the 6th inning.
With the Victory tonight, CUH is 1-0 on the year, while Vanguard falls to 2-5 on the year.
Game # 2 The second game of the tonight's double header with Vanguard also went 7 innings. The Lady Lions came out real strong; they scored in 5 of the 7 innings played and appeared to grow more and more confident as the game progressed. However, the Lady Swords never gave up and fought hard until the bitter end.
In the bottom of the 5th inning CUH scored 4 runs and in the bottom 6th they scored 2 more runs. Despite scoring 6 runs in two innings, CUH came up short.
Hall of fame Coach Vince Lombardi once said, “The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price.”
Even though one game didn't go CUH's way tonight, one thing is clear to anyone who watched both games tonight. That is, that the 2010 Lady Swords of Chaminade University, understand the wise words spoken by Hall of Fame Coach Vince Lombardi. They never gave up despite being down 5 runs to 0 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning.
The Lady Swords are back in action tomorrow afternoon in another double header match up. Chaminade squares off against cross town rival, Hawaii Pacific University. HPU is currently undefeated with a record of 4-0. Last season Hawaii Pacific finished up with a record of 20-4 in the Pacific West Conference. First pitch is set for 12:00PM HST at Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipahu
With the loss in the second game, CUH falls to 1-1 overall on the year, while Vanguard improves their record to 3-5overall.
