Waipahu, HI – The Lady Swords took on rival BYU Hawaii and swept them today in front of what was their largest crowd of the season, they won both games by a score of 5 to 4.
Legendary College Football Coach, Lou Holtz, once said, “If you're bored with life - you don't get up every morning with a burning desire to do things - you don't have enough goals.”
The Lady Swords in the 2009 Softball season played BYU Hawaii 8 times. They won 2 of those 8 games. All things considered they are ahead of where they were last season. They had goal this morning before they played the Seasiders; that was to win… And they did, in impressive fashion.
Game # 1
Kelly Korras started the first game for the Silverswords and pitched all 7 innings. She faced 37 batters; she gave up 10 hits, had 5 walks and struck out 4.
BYU Hawaii got on the board first thanks in large part to triple from lead off hitter, Ashley Parry. Kaila Anderson knocked in Ashley Parry on a hard hit ball up the middle. Chaminade's Dawn Dela Cruz fielded the ball well; she threw home to no success, as Parry was running full speed for home plate the second the ball smashed into the infield and rolled towards centerfield.
BYU Hawaii scored once more in the Top of the 2nd inning, the Seasiders got a couple of singles early in the inning and were able to capitalize and score a couple of runs.
At the end of 2 innings the score was Seasiders 2 Silverswords 0. The rest of the game is all Chaminade, they went on a tear and scored 5 runs.BYU Hawaii trailed going into the Top of the 7th, 5 to 2. They were able to score to more runs, however, it was great defense and solid determination from Chaminade that proved to be too much for the Seasiders in game # 1, CUH won the first game 5 to 4.
Game # 2
Kasy'e Lalau started the second game for Chaminade and she too, pitched a solid game. She also pitched all 7 innings and in the process she gave up 4 earned runs. She faced 34 batters; she gave up 14 hits, 5 strike outs and just 2 walks.
The 2010 Captain of the Chaminade University Silveswords is, Keli-Grace Kaowili- Sanatian. Captain as defined in relation to sports in the Websters dictionary, is defined as follows”. the field leader of a team.” That being said, Chaminade's captain couldn't have led her team any better, she had 4 of the 5 RBI's for the Lady Swords. She was 3 for 3 from the plate, she had 2 doubles and 1 single.
BYU Hawaii fought hard all game. They never gave up, in the bottom of the 6th inning, Janeece Veazie belted a ball deep and over the center field wall for a 2 run home run. The inning ended, with the score 5 runs to 2.
In the final inning of play Kasy'e Lalau and Janeece Veazie would meet again; a couple of singles and walk .. would once again set up force these two players to meet head to head.
With the bases loaded, Kasy'e forced Janeece Veazie to swing at a ball she didn't want to. Forced to swing at what would have strike three and ball game over for BYU Hawaii, Veazie check swung and the ball bounced off her bat and trickled towards third base. The slow moving ball was picked up by Kori Berinobis, who threw to first basemen, Melissa Harris, for the final out. Lady Swords 5 Seasiders 4.
