PHOENIX, AZ- Chaminade continues to look for a road victory, falling in a tough battle with Grand Canyon today in three sets 21-25, 16-25 and 21-25. Despite the defeat, the Swords put up a valiant effort in the Pac West Conference match with the 'Lopes at Antelope Gym on the GCU campus.
The Swords battled in the opening set, closing to within a point at 20-21 on a kill from senior
Poerava Gantt (Kapa'a, HI/Kapa'a). GCU responded with three points in a row and won the set 25-21. The second set was back and forth early, as the set was tied at 12-12 before GCU took control and took the second set by nine points. The 'Lopes and Swords battled again in the third set and despite setbacks in the first two sets and Chaminade had the set tied at 14-14 in the third set before falling 21-25.
Junior
Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) had 7 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore
Crystal Powell (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) added 8 kills in defeat for CUH. Senior setter
Kristina Donathan (Honolulu, HI/St. Andrew's Priory) led the offense with 23 assists and 12 digs for Chaminade.
The Swords won the dig battle as Chaminade had 50 digs while Grand Canyon had 48.
GCU was led by Stephanie McBride with 13 kills.
The Swords fall to 2-14 (1-9 PWC) with the loss. The 'Lopes move to 14-6 (8-4 in PWC). Chaminade's road trip continues on October 18
th at Grand Canyon. First serve is set for 6 PM MT.
