CUH MBB: Chaminade Falls to #17 Freed-Hardeman in OT 101-97

Cousins leads with a double-double (22 points, and 13 rebounds)

Box Score HONOLULU, HI – The Swords lost to the Lions of Freed-Hardeman this afternoon in their last game before the holiday break by a score of 101-97 in overtime.
 
CUH got out early, leading 7-0 with just over two minutes gone in the contest.  Freed-Hardeman responded with a 12-2 run to lead 19-9 halfway through the first half.  Neither Chaminade or FHU could provide any separation in the half as the game went to the break knotted at 39 apiece.  Senior forward Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) nearly had a double-double in the first half with 12 points and 8 rebounds in the opening twenty minutes.  CUH shot 40% in the opening half, while the Lions shot 44%.  Each team connected on two three-pointers in the opening half.    
 
The second half opened with a quick start by Freed–Hardeman as the Lions went up 51-46 at the 17:07 mark in the second half.  The back and forth game went down to the wire as two Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, AUS/Holy Spirit) free throws made the game 80-78 FHU with four minutes remaining.  The game went down to the final moments as a Dominique Cooks made one free throw to make it 88-85 FHU with 48.6 left. Another Cooks basket cut the lead to one at 88-87 with just seconds remaining.  Trailing by three, Lee Bailey (Detroit, MI/Detroit County Day was fouled on a three with just 2.5 seconds left.  Bailey hit all three to knot the game at 90-90.  The game headed to overtime after a half-court heave by the Lions fell short.
 
A Lee Bailey three gave the Swords a 95-94 lead with 1:12 remaining in OT.  FHU scored the next seven points and earned the 101-97 victory.    
 
 
Senior forward Matt Cousins (Santa Rosa, CA/Cardinal Newman) was dominate in the paint for CUH with a double-double: 22 points and 13 rebounds.  Junior Bennie Murray (Fairfield, CA/ Will C. Wood) was 8-17 from the floor for 19 points.
 
Lee Bailey contributed 19 points and 2 assists while junior Dominique Cooks (Wollongong, AUS/Holy Spirit) had an all-around performance for Chaminade with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in 39 minutes.  CUH guard Waly Coulibaly, (Bamako, Mali/Patterson) joined Cooks, Cousins, Bailey and Murray in double figures with 15 points, including three three's. 
 
The Swords barely lost the rebounding battle 41-40.  Chaminade shot 45% and Freed-Hardeman shot 47%.  CUH knocked down 8 threes on the game.
 
Freed-Hardeman was led by Kyle Teichmann with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Chaminade's next opponent is Hawaii Pacific on January 5th in McCabe Gym.  Tip is set for 7:30 PM HT.
 
With the loss the Swords fall to 3-5, while the Lions move to 10-3.
