Box Score HILO, HI- Chaminade earned their second draw in four days today in a PacWest contest against the Vulcans of UH-Hilo. The score finished 1-1 in overtime on the Big Island.
The first half saw UH-Hilo take a 1-0 lead as a Morgan Popp header off a corner kick gave the Vulcans the one goal advantage in the 18
th minute. Swords freshman backup goalkeeper Tom Higgins (Wakefield, RI/ South Kingstown) started in today's contest and contributed a save in the first half to keep the contest 1-0 at the break. CUH forced the Vulcans into two saves in the opening forty-five minutes, but could not find the equalizer before halftime.
The Silverswords offense was the aggressor in the second half, out-shooting UHH 5-2. The aggression was rewarded as Chaminade notched the equalizer on a penalty kick goal from junior
Sam Galloway (Akron, OH/Copley) in the 77
th minute. Galloway led all players with four shots on the contest. The match shot total concluded with each team tallying eight shots on the match.
The score did not change in overtime, and concluded as a 1-1 draw.
Thomas Higgins made 2 saves for CUH.
Coach Higgins expressed his thoughts on the draw: “Hilo scored off a corner in the first half, but we responded in the second half with a desire to compete and score. I was pleased with our possession in the second half and our attacking mentality. Our chances led to our PK goal from Sam Galloway. The overtimes led to a few chances for us and Hilo but neither team converted. Overall, it's a quality result considering all the injuries we have.”
With the draw, Chaminade moves to (2-8-3, 2-6-3 PWC). Hilo goes to (2-7-2, 2-6-2 PWC). Chaminade is back in action vs. Bethesda University (CA) on October 22nd. The match is set for 10:00 AM HT.
