CUH Softball: Swords Drop Back and Forth Affair with St. Martin’s 4-3

Kori Berinobis leads with two hits for Chaminade

Box Score TURLOCK, CA –Chaminade lost a closely contested contest to the Saints of St. Martin's this afternoon in CUH's second game in The Tournament of Champions. The Swords took an early lead, scoring two runs in the second inning and led 2-1 after two.  Freshman Ashley Phelps (Torrance, CA/South) and junior Kori Berinobis (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) each had an RBI hit in the inning. Berinobis led Chaminade with two hits.

The sixth inning saw Chaminade tack on an insurance run, only to see the Saints tally two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3-3.  SMU won the game in the bottom of the seventh as a Sara Bakos hit drove in the game-winning run.

Coach Yamaguchi commented on the loss: “We had the lead most of the way.  It was a good game, well-played by both sides.  Our defense is playing well; we had 0 errors in the game.  We had chances on offense to extend our lead and we didn't.  Give credit to St. Martin's, I still feel like we are playing well.”

Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Watanabe (Kula, HI/Baldwin) took the loss for Chaminade giving up ten hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Chaminade is back in action against Western Oregon this evening in Turlock, CA. First pitch is set for 8:00 PM PT.

The Swords move to 9-17, 7-11 in PWC with the loss, while St. Martin's moves to 17-9-1.
