CUH Softball: Swords Wins Thriller with Western Washington 5-4

Keyes drives in game-winner for Chaminade

Box Score TURLOCK, CA –Boosted by a large contigent of Chaminade supporters, the Swords defeated the Vikings of Western Washington 5-4 in a Sunday morning contest at The Tournament of Champions. 
 
The Vikings took an early lead, scoring one run in the second inning and two more runs in the fourth inning before CUH answered with their offense.  Chaminade scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits, including doubles by shortstop Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) and freshman Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran).  At the end of four innings the game was tied 3-3.
 
Western Washington tallied a run in the top of the sixth going ahead 4-3, setting up a thrilling finish.  A single by senior Anuhea Yamaguchi (Ewa Beach, HI/Campbell) scored the tying run, then a second RBI by Aja Keyes on a single up the middle secured the 5-4 win for the Swords. 
 
Five players finished with two hits for the Silverswords. Chaminade had twelve hits while the Vikings had nine hits on the contest. 
 
Coach Yamaguchi commented on the game: “We won in exciting fashion.  The fans helped too, we have a big following here and it's great.  Western Washington scored first, but we came back in the fourth.  Our bats were going and Rayna (Strom-Okimoto) continues to hit well.  Aja Keyes hit well.  A lot of players did.  They decided to pitch around Rayna and the rest of our team was hitting too.”
 
Chaminade is back in action against NDNU in a non-conference matchup in Turlock, CA. First pitch is set for 2:30 PM PT today.  The contest is a part of Bronze bracket play. 
 
The Swords move to 11-18, 7-11 PWC with the win, while Western Washington falls to 7-24.
