CUH Softball: Swords Drop Two in Doubleheader with UH-Hilo, 7-4 and 3-2

Strom-Okimoto leads Swords with four RBI’s over two games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILO, HI – Chaminade lost two games with Hawaii-Hilo in a tough doubleheader against the Vulcans on the Big Island.  The Silverswords lost game one 7-4 and lost a nail-biter in game two 3-2.

Chaminade started the scoring in game one with two runs in the first inning.  Junior Kori Berinobis (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) singled and Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) homered to give CUH an early 2-0 lead.  The lead would be short-lived as UH-Hilo scored five runs in the bottom of the inning and held the Swords off, winning game one 7-4.  Chaminade left five on base in game one.

Freshman Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) took the game one loss for the Swords, giving up seven runs on twelve hits in seven innings.

Game two was a low-scoring affair as UH-Hilo took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Chaminade gained the lead.  Kori Berinobis, with three hits on the day, singled in the fourth inning and a double by Strom-Okimoto scored Berinobis.  Strom-Okimoto scored on a wild pitch and CUH took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.  Following two UH-Hilo runs (one in the fifth, one in the sixth) Chaminade threatened in the bottom of the sixth.  Freshman Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) doubled and Letisha Vaba (Stockton, CA/San Joaquin) singled and Keyes moved to third.  CUH was unable to drive either player in, and ended up dropping game two 3-2.

Freshman Kaitlyn Watanabe (Kula, HI/Baldwin) took the loss for CUH in the second contest, giving up three runs and allowing seven hits.

Chaminade is back in PacWest conference action on April 22nd against Hawaii-Hilo in Hilo, HI.  First pitch is set for 2:30 PM HT.

The Swords move to 15-28, 9-21 PWC, while Hawaii-Hilo goes to 22-18, 16-11 PWC with the sweep.
