CUH Softball: Swords Drop Two Contests at Dixie State, 7-5 and 11-1 (5 inn.)

Game one comeback effort falls short

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, UT –Chaminade lost two contests today to the Red Storm of Dixie State to conclude an otherwise successful road trip.  The Swords gave Dixie all they could handle in game one, before relenting in a 7-5 game one defeat.

The first contest saw the Red Storm hit a three-run homerun in the first inning and tacked on two more runs in the second to lead 5-0 early on.  Dixie led 7-0 before Chaminade would respond, and respond they did.  Chaminade had a four-run fifth inning to tighten the score to 7-4 late in the contest.  Following a scoreless sixth inning, the Swords had Dixie in trouble again as a solo homerun by PacWest Player of the Week; Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) cut the lead to two at 7-5.  Strom-Okimoto went 3-4 in game one.  CUH continued to put runners on in the seventh inning, but the Red Storm got out of the jam and earned a 7-5 victory.

Freshman pitcher Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) took the loss for the Swords, going five innings and giving up seven runs.

Game two started out with eerie similarities to game one as Dixie again scored five runs in the first two innings to lead 5-0.  The Red Storm added another run in the third inning and five in the fifth to win by eight-run rule, 11-1.  Chaminade scored a run in the fourth as senior catcher Anuhea Yamaguchi (Ewa Beach, HI/Campbell) singled and scored freshman Shannan Hokama (Torrance, CA/South).  The Swords managed five hits in game two.

Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Watanabe (Kula, HI/Baldwin) took the loss for Chaminade in game two giving up six runs in three innings.

Coach Yamaguchi commented on the loss: “Our road trip is over. Our team came to play today, Rayna (Strom-Okimoto) is still hitting and the teams playing good ball. We just ran into a good team at the end of a long road trip. Dixie did a nice job figuring out our pitching the second game.”

Chaminade is back in action against BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, April 7th in Waipio, HI (CORP). First pitch is set for 12:00 PM HT.

The Swords move to 13-20, 7-13 in PWC with the loss, while Dixie State moves to 23-10.
