SB: Swords Sweep Seasiders; 6-2, 7-6

Box Score WAIPIO, HI- The Chaminade softball team swept a Pac West doubleheader from BYU-Hawai'i at Corp Field today, 6-2 and 7-6. Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) got the win in both games, while Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) collected four combined hits, while Shannan Hokama (Torrance, CA/South) had three RBI.

In Game 1, the Seasiders struck first when the first four batters reached, culminating with a Tiffanee Framption RBI single to left to make it 1-0 BYUH. But Aspel limited the damage to only the single run by getting a force out at home and  two fly outs to end the inning.

The Swords came back in the second with back-to-back doubles from Letisha Vaba (Stockton, CA) and Samantha Ford (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life), the latter bringing home Vaba.

Chaminade added two more runs in the third on an RBI ground-out by Elia Lizarraga (Torrance, CA/Narbonne) and a Vaba RBI single, making it 4-0. The Swords added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth on Hokama's RBI triple to right, making it 6-0.

Aspel picked the win, improving to 4-7 on the season. Frampton took the loss, falling to 3-12. Keyes, Vaba and Ford each collected two hits and an RBI.

In Game 2, the Swords got on the board when Hokama hit a two-out triple into the left field corner, then came home on Kori Berinobis' base hit. CUH added a second run on a passed ball, scoring Kori Berinobis (Kaneohe, HI/Castle). The Swords threatened to add even more, but Seasiders centerfielder Chandra Tewari made a spectacular leaping catch at the fence, taking a potential 3-run home run away from Tuma Enos.

BYUH got on the scoreboard in the fourth on a Frampton solo homer, cutting the Swords' lead to 2-1.

CUH got the run back in the bottom of the fourth, when Hokama delivered a two-out, RBI single to right, bringing home Ford. An error by BYUH on the next at-bat brought home Ashley Phelps, increasing the lead to 4-1.

BYUH would add five runs in the fifth, the big blow a 3-run homer by Sara Brown, to give the Seasiders a 5-4 lead. The next batter, Frampton, made it back-to-back homers, crushing a pitch into right, her second of the game, chasing Kaitlyn Watanabe (Kula, HI/Baldwn) from the circle, replaced by Aspel.

Then in the bottom half of the fifth, Keyes singled, followed by Tumamaopavaiai Enos (Pahoa, HI/Pahoa) being hit by a pitch. After two pinch runners came in for CUH, and a pitching change by the Seasiders, the runners moved up on a ground out by Lizarraga. CUH loaded the bases when Vaba was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Ford, hit a one-hopper to second, which was mishandled, bringing home two runs to tie the game at 6. Phelps then hit an infield single, bringing home the go-ahead run in Vaba.

The Seasiders threatened in the sixth, putting the tying run at second, but Aspel struck out Corallee Alexander to end the inning.

The Seasiders' explosive top of the order, which had six hits and three home runs in the game, starting off the inning, but Aspel set them down in order to secure the 7-6 win and the doubleheader sweep. Aspel picked up the win in relief in improving to 5-7 on the season. Frampton, who also came into the circle in relief, absorbed the loss to drop to 2-12.
