’Swords Suffer Sweep to Seasiders

Phelps excelled behind the plate with three pickoffs while throwing out a batter trying to steal during the doubleheader against BYUH.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAIE, Hawai'i – The mastery of BYU-Hawai'i over the Chaminade University softball team in Laie continued as the Seasiders swept a Pacific West Conference doubleheader from the Silverswords, 3-1 and 7-1, Saturday at BYUH Softball Field.

BYUH (7-13, 5-11 PacWest) won its fifth straight overall and evened the series against the Silverswords. The Seasiders also captured their eighth straight win over the Silverswords in Laie. The 'Swords (6-8, 5-7 PacWest) haven't won a game at BYUH Field since March 2011.

Game 1

The Silverswords threatened in the second inning, loading the bases on Seasiders' ace, Gabby Hawkins. But the 'Swords were unable to push a run across as they left the bases full.

Chaminade finally struck in the third when Ashley Phelps led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Phelps got to second then an errant pickoff throw from the catcher to first went into right field. Samantha Ford then moved her to third on ground out. Aja Keyes' groundout to first brought Phelps home for the game's first run.

Meanwhile, CUH hurler Brett Aspel was cruising through, allowing only a walk in her first 4.1 innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Maria Micheli broke up her no-hit bid with a single up the middle, followed by pinch-hitter Pitisi Tualau's single to center. Aspel then walked Rebecca Mawson to load the bases, resulting in Marisella Rodriguez being summoned from the bullpen.

An illegal pitch was then called, allowing each runner to move up a base as Micheli trotted home to tie the game. Keegan Hanny then blooped a single to left, bringing home two more runs, making it 3-1.

Chaminade managed to get the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.

Despite allowing only two hits, Aspel was charged with the loss to fall to 2-6. Hawkins, fourth in the PacWest with a 2.55 ERA, got the complete game win, allowing only three hits, although she walked three and plunked another three, to even her record to 4-4.

Game 2
In the second inning, the 'Swords loaded the bases on two hit batters and a Theresa Capllonch single to right, but left them loaded. In the bottom of the second, Rebecca Mawson opened the scoring with two-out solo homer to left center.

In the fourth, Ciana Russ doubled to left and two batters later, Shannan Hokama drove in Russ when she laced a two-out RBI triple down the right field line, tying the game at 1. Hawkins relieved starter Keegan Hanny and induced a groundout, leaving Hokama stranded at third.

The Seasiders exploded in the fifth with RBI hits from Josey Walker and Mawson as well as a two-out throwing error plated two more runs. The error proved more costly when Taylor Alvarez doubled in two more. In all, six runs came around in the fifth, making it 7-1.

CUH threatened in the sixth, loading the bases on back-to-back two-out singles by Capllonch and Hokama, followed by a Nicole Erichsen walk. Hawkins struck out Terayama swinging with the ball getting past Whitney Gustafson, but the catcher recovered the loose ball and tagged the plate ahead of Capllonch for the final out.

Hawkins got the win, allowing no runs in 2.1 innings of relief, improving to 5-4. Watanabe suffered her first loss of the year, dropping her to 3-1.

Capllonch and Hokama got two hits each for the 'Swords. Mawson was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs for BYUH.

Meanwhile, Phelps had a stellar game behind the plate for Chaminade, getting three pick offs – two in the second game - and threw a runner out at second trying to steal, also during Game 2.

The Silverswords return to Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park on Tuesday when they face Academy of Art. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. with live streaming audio available on goswords.com.
