’Swords Softball Finally Plays, Swept by Holy Names

Ford had four hits in the doubleheader, including her first career homer.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPIO, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University softball team finally got back on the field after two days of waiting for the rains to clear.

The weather cooperated on Monday morning as the skies cleared, but the rust of not having played a regular season game in over two weeks was apparent as the Silverswords were swept in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader against Holy Names at Patsy T. Mink CORP Field, 12-4 and 10-9 in eight innings.

The doubleheader was a make-up from Saturday's rainout.

Chaminade fell to 2-2, both overall and in the PacWest. Holy Names improved to 6-10 and 2-0.

In Game 1, the Hawks jumped all over starter Brett Aspel from the beginning with five runs in the first two innings.

The 'Swords got two runs back in their half of the second, as HNU starter Vanessa Pulido loaded the bases with no outs. Samantha Ford then singled to left to bring home lead-off batter Jenn Betian, but the leftfielder bobbled the ball, allowing Coco Stewart to round third and score.

But the Hawks answered an inning later with a 3-run homer by Ariana Marquez, as Aspel was relieved by Marisella Rodriguez.

After Holy Names added a run in the fourth, Chaminade got a lead-off double by Ashley Phelps, the team's first extra base hit of the regular season. Ford then followed with a 2-run blast over the left field fence, the junior's first career home run, cutting the deficit to 9-4.

But HNU slammed the door shut on the first game by adding three more runs in the sixth and seventh inning.

Ford went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Phelps also tallied a pair of hits in the first game.

Karolanne Tipton, who came out of the bullpen for Pulido in the second inning, pitched six innings while striking out nine to earn the win. Aspel took the loss.

In Game 2, the Hawks scored the first three runs, but CUH got two back on Keyes' double with two outs in the third, driving in Elia Lizarraga and Coco Stewart.

HNU tacked on another run to make it 4-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Ciana Russ walked with one out, followed by Ford's single. Then in an attempt to pick off Russ at second, the catcher threw the ball into center, allowing both runners to move up. Pinch-hitter Kristiann Endow then drove Russ home with a sacrifice fly to right. The next batter, Shannan Hokama sliced a single to shortstop, allowing Ford to score the tying run at 4.

The Hawks eventually took a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh but the Silverswords dug deep. Pinch-hitter Phelps and Lizarraga led off with back-to-back singles. After a pitching change and a batter later with runners on the corners, Keyes drilled a liner to left center, scoring pinch runner Sierra Mendiola. The next batter, Nicole Erichsen, had an RBI groundout to HNU shortstop Marissa Perez, scoring the tying run in Stewart, while Keyes moved to third. Theresa Capllonch then hit a bouncing ball up the middle, but Perez made a game-saving play, reaching out to her left and throwing Capllonch out, denying Keyes from scoring the game-winner and sending the contest in extra innings.

HNU would take a 10-6 lead in the eighth, the big blow coming on Lyveana Ilanyan's 3-run bomb.

Chaminade refused to go quietly. The 'Swords loaded the bases on three consecutive singles, despite starter Vanessa Pulido returning to the game after being relieved the previous inning by Nicole Ochoa. Mendiola then got on via fielder's choice, but Perez bobbled the ball, allowing both Russ and Ford to come home, making it 10-8. After a Lizarraga sac bunt, Stewart hit a ball to shortstop, but Mendiola who was moving from second to third on the play was thrown out, but allowed Kaleen Terayama to score, making it 10-9. Keyes then came up to the plate as the winning run, but popped out to end the game.

Keyes swung the heavy stick for Chaminade, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI while Lizarraga, Stewart and Ford each had two.

Pulido got the win, coming out of the pen, while starter Ochoa got the save. Reliever Chelsea Camello was tagged with the loss.

Chaminade returns to CORP Field on Tuesday to face Spokane Falls Community College in an exhibition doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. Both will also be streamed live on goswords.com.

Also, Sunday's rainout between the 'Swords and Hawks has been rescheduled for Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at CORP Field.
