HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team stepped out of regular season action Tuesday and faced Waseda University at the new McKinley High School Softball Stadium.
The visitors from Tokyo, Japan took both games of the exhibition twin bill, 3-1 and 6-2.
Theresa Capllonch had a combined three hits with a run and RBI for the Silverswords. Waseda's Yuki Takeuchi and Kana Ouchi each had three total hits with Takeuchi driving in two and Ouchi scoring twice.
Game 1 (Box)Waseda scored twice in the top of the first on Takeuchi's two-run single to left and led 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Capllonch hit a sinking liner to right, but Takeuchi misplayed the hop as the ball scooted past her and rolled to the fence, allowing Caplloch to take third on the two-base error.
Shannan Hokama then singled to left-center, allowing Capllonch to cross the plate, cutting the Chaminade deficit to 2-1.
But Waseda got the run back in the sixth on Karen Ban's RBI single, making it 3-1.
The 'Swords threatened in the bottom of the seventh as
Coco Stewart singled to lead off the frame, then Capllonch walked to put the winning run on base. But Mako Miyakawa retired the next three batters to preserve the lead.
Elia Lizarraga had two hits for Chaminade and was the game's only two-hit player.
Waseda starter Shiyuki Tokiwa pitched five innings, scattering five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Miyakawa earned the save. Chaminade starter
Brett Aspel was charged with the loss, pitching four innings of four-hit ball with a walk and pair of Ks.
Kaitlyn Watanabe pitched the final three innings, allowing three hits and a run.
Game 2 (Box)Chaminade was the visiting team in Game 2, but the start was similar as the first with Waseda scoring twice in the opening frame. They tacked on two more in the third to grab a 4-0 lead.
The 'Swords finally scratched out a run in the top of the fifth as
Racquel Misioka drew a lead-off walk.
Kaleen Terayama's sacrifice bunt and a passed ball moved her to third. Capllonch then lined a pitch into left to bring Misioka home.
Waseda countered with two runs in the bottom of half of the inning on Ayumi Takahashi's two-run double to make it 6-1.
Pinch-hitter
Luana Moreno laced a double to center to lead off the sixth and was replaced by
Kristiann Endow as a pinch-runner. Endow then tagged up to third on
Kylie Nishino's deep fly to right. Two batters later, Misioka worked a full count, then lined a single up the middle for a two-out RBI to bring home Endow.
Racquel Misioka Waseda threatened to add more runs in its half of the sixth by loading the bases, but reliever
Chelsea Camello induced a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play.
Capllonch was 2-for-2 in the second game while Misioka walked twice in addition to her RBI single. Ouchi and Takeuchi both had two hits for Waseda in Game 2.
Kaho Izumi earned the win, pitching four innings of two-hit ball with four strikeouts. Miyakawa earned her second save of the night, throwing the final 2 1/3 innings.
Moreno was tagged with the loss. She along with
Marisella Rodriguez and Camello tossed two innings and all three allowed two runs.
The Silveswords return to regular season play as face defending Pacific West Conference co-champion California Baptist in the first of a four-game series beginning Friday at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park. Live streaming audio will be available on GoSwords.com.
