HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team got a peek at their 2019 squad in the opener of the Kama'aina Fall Classic Friday at the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Silverswords, who have four freshmen – five newcomers in all – faced their Division I host Hawai'i but were blanked 9-0 in the annual tournament which they have been participating in for nearly two decades.
Three Rainbow Wahine pitchers combined to toss a perfect game against the 'Swords in the exhibition.
Kayla Higuchi (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) got the nod in the circle for Chaminade and went a planned three innings after allowing 11 hits and six earned runs.
Madelyn Stockslager (Torrance, Calif./South) went the final three and allowed three hits and one earned run. The sophomore also got the 'Swords' lone strikeout.
They also got to see different defensive combinations with several veterans including usual leftfielder
Kayla Henmi (Torrance, Calif./South) in center, third baseman
Makena Kealoha (Corona, Calif./Norco) in left field while freshmen
Cheyne Obara (Pearl City, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) and
Hailey Matsumura (Honolulu/Saint Francis) were slotted at second base and shortstop, respectively.
The game, as is the entire Classic, is played with relaxed rules; no mercy-rule in effect and free substitutions throughout so both teams can get extended looks at each player.
The three-day exhibition continues Saturday with the Silverswords playing twice. They'll face Fullerton College at 1 p.m. followed by a rematch with UH at 5 p.m.
