Softball Drops Pair at Kama‘aina Classic

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team continued to get an early look to their 2019 roster with a split doubleheader in the Kama'aina Fall Classic Saturday at the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Silverswords (0-3) dropped both games, 17-5 to Fullerton College in the early afternoon contest then 10-0 to the tournament's Division I host Hawai'i in the final game. Because all games in the tournament are exhibitions, there is no run-rule with free substitutions.

Rainelle Matsuoka (Honolulu/Kaiser) had four hits on the day, getting two base knocks in each game. Kayla Henmi (Torrance, Calif./South) had three hits including a pair against the Rainbow Wahine.

'Swords head coach Kent Yamaguchi continued to experiment with the team's defensive alignment, putting Matsuoka, the team's three-year starter at shortstop, in centerfield for both games while third baseman Makena Kealoha (Corona, Calif./Norco) saw time in right field.

Game 1 vs. Fullerton College
The Silverswords, who were the victims of a combined perfect game against UH on Friday, once again had trouble getting base runners on board. Chaminade's first nine batters were retired before the 'Swords finally got a leadoff walk by Ashlyn Yagin (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) in the fourth inning, breaking a streak of 11 consecutive innings without a base runner.

Chaminade finally got its first hit of the tournament on pinch-hitter Marlisa Berrelleza's (Indio, Calif./Indio) leadoff single in the fifth. A two-out fielding error by Fullerton brought her home for the 'Swords' first run.

The 'Swords got another run in the sixth on an RBI hit from Alexas Presto-Ahsing (Pearl City, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) then added three more in the seventh when they loaded the bases on three straight singles from first-year players Karyna Baldomino (Diamond Bar, Calif./Rowland), Hailey Matsumura (Honolulu/Saint Francis) and Cheyne Obara (Pearl City, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City). Yagin and Henmi then had run-producing ground-outs with the third run plating on an error.

Kayla Higuchi (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Aiea) got the start for the second straight game and went four innings while Michelle Sasaki (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kalaheo) made her pitching debut and went the final three.

Game 2 vs. Hawai'i
Chaminade didn't wait very long to get its first hit against UH when Matsuoka, who started in center, singled to right-center. Henmi got their second hit, slapping a single to right to start the fourth. Both seniors also had hits in the sixth inning.

Madelyn Stockslager (Torrance, Calif./South) went the distance for the 'Swords in the circle and stuck out six Rainbow Wahine, the most by any CUH pitcher against UH since box scores were being kept.

The Silverswords wrap their fall non-championship season Sunday in the final day of the Fall Classic finale. They'll face Fullerton in the 12 p.m. opener then face Antelope Valley in their final game at 2 p.m.
