IRVINE, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Pacific West Conference Preseason Coaches Poll released Wednesday.
The Silverswords received 121 points and one first-place vote. Concordia Irvine was picked to win the conference with 137 points and eight first-place votes while Azusa Pacific received 131 points and three top votes. Defending PacWest champion and last season's national runner-up Point Loma was chosen fourth.
Meanwhile senior wing
Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) was selected to the All-Preseason Pacific West Conference Team. Cartaino was an all-conference first team selection last season and was listed on the Street & Smith College Yearbook Division II All-America honorable mention team.
Joining Cartaino on the all-preseason team are Michael Bagatourian (Biola), Aamondae Coleman (Fresno Pacific),Robert McCoy (Concordia), Sterling Somers (Point Loma) and preseason player of the year Selom Mawugbe (Azusa Pacific).
The 'Swords open the season Wednesday against their Division I neighbor University of Hawai'i in an exhibition at the Stan Sheriff Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Their regular season opener is Saturday, Nov. 9 against the University of Alaska in the PacWest/GNAC Challenge in Anchorage, Alaska.
