Fans will get a preview of the 2020 Chaminade University softball team when they participate in the annual Fall Preseason Classic this weekend, hosted by Division I University of Hawai'i-Manoa at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Â
Host UH and Fullerton College from Fullerton, California, comprise the tournament, which begins Friday when the Silverswords face the Rainbow Wahine at 6 p.m.
Â
The 'Swords will take on Fullerton on Saturday at 10 a.m. then close out the tournament with two games on Sunday. They'll square off against the Hornets at 12 p.m. followed by Hawai'i at 2 p.m.
Â
Chaminade returns both its All-Pacific West Conference selections from last season in utility player
Malia Ka`akimaka-Moisa (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell) and pitcher
Madelyn Stockslager (Torrance, Calif./South).
Â
After the losses of seven impact players, the 'Swords are loaded with underclassman and have only one senior in outfielder
Kaitlyn Castillo (Makawao, Maui, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Maui).
Â
Head coach
Kent Yamaguchi, in his 15th year at the helm, has eight newcomers including highly decorated freshmen pitchers
Jaeda Cabunoc (Honolulu/Roosevelt) and
Taylor Genera (Norwalk, Calif./Whitney). Their additions, along with Stockslager (11-15, 2.48 ERA, 106 strikeouts) as the team's ace, has the potential to form a formidable pitching staff this season.
