HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team continued to get a good look at their 2020 squad Saturday by facing Fullerton College in Day 2 of the Fall Preseason Classic hosted by the University of Hawai'i at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Silverswords defeated the Hornets, 4-2, behind another solid pitching outing and a big third inning.
Chaminade employed the same lineup they used in Friday's opener against Hawai'i with four freshmen;
Kailah Gates-Coyaso (Waianae, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waianae) at catcher,
Kobe Brown (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) at first base,
Jaeda Cabunoc (Honolulu/Roosevelt) at third and
Kieran Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif./Frontier) in center field.
Taylor Genera (Norwalk, Calif./Whitney), who started in the circle against UH, got the nod at designated player, making way for
Madelyn Stockslager (Torrance, Calif./South) who took the ball.
Stockslager, the All-Pacific West Conference Third Team hurler from last season was effective in her first start, collecting three strikeouts through the first three frames.
The 'Swords loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second then Gates-Coyaso singled to center to plate their first run of the tournament.
Chaminade got a big third inning with the help of three infield singles.
Malia Ka`akimaka-Moisa (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Campbell), the team's other All-PacWest performer last year, provided the big blow with a three-run blast to center, putting the 'Swords up 4-0.
The Hornets came back with a pair of two-out runs in the sixth off Genera but the freshman pitcher shut the door in the seventh.
The 'Swords managed seven hits with Ka'akimaka-Moisa's blast being their only extra base hit.
Stockslager got the win, allowing two hits in five innings. Genera tossed the final two, allowing four hits
Being an exhibition where statistics do not count, Fullerton is not using uniform numbers during the tournament and their players are not being logged in the box scores.
The Silverswords wrap up the Fall Classic and exhibition season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Fullerton (12 p.m.) and Hawai'i (2 p.m.).
